Effects of the Picture Exchange Communication System on Requesting Behavior of Preschoolers with Autism Spectrum Disorders

Abstract
The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of the Picture Exchange Communication System(PECS) on requesting behavior of preschooler with autism spectrum disorders. The subjects were three preschool girls with autism spectrum disorders. The multiple probe design across participants was used for the research design. The PECS phases 1-3 were implemented in the subjects¡¯ homes and data were collected during natural activities. Three weeks after the intervention was completed, maintenance effects were evaluated and the five sessions were conducted to examine the generalization across situation and subject. The results of this study were as follows. First, the PECS were effective in increasing the requesting behavior of the preschoolers with autism spectrum disorders. Second, the effects of the intervention were maintained. Third, requesting behavior of the participants were generalized to situation and subject. These results imply that PECS is effective to improve the functional communication skill of preschooler with ASD.
